Veteran actor Anupam Kher has returned to Bengali cinema after 26 years, this time stepping in as a producer. His comeback has sparked fresh interest in an industry he says continues to face challenges.
Kher co-produces the upcoming Bengali film Shuru Theke Shuru, which translates to “Starting from the Beginning”. The Telegraph reported the development.
Debutant filmmaker Shamik Banerjee directs the film. The cast features Rahul Bose, Tota Roy Chowdhury, Paoli Dam and Sneha Paul in key roles.
Kher, a Padma Bhushan awardee and actor-producer-author, spoke about his return to Bengali cinema in an interview with The Telegraph Online. He discussed his long-standing connection with the city, the condition of the Bengali film industry and his views on the region’s evolving political landscape under the new BJP government.
The actor said his return marks a meaningful step after more than two decades away from Bengali films. He added that the industry continues to face structural and creative challenges, but also holds strong storytelling potential.
Shuru Theke Shuru marks his first Bengali production involvement in 26 years and signals a renewed engagement with regional cinema at a time of transition for the industry.
