Veteran actress Shabnam now leads a quiet life at her home on Park Road in Baridhara, Dhaka, spending much of her time with her only son, Roni.
The legendary star, who once captivated audiences on the big screen, says her days now revolve around television, newspapers, social media and occasional outings.
She regularly watches television, reads newspapers and scrolls through Facebook to keep up with events at home and abroad. She also attends social gatherings from time to time and occasionally travels overseas.
However, since the death of her husband, renowned music director Robin Ghosh, she has become more withdrawn and rarely feels like going out.
Shabnam’s only son, Roni, has chosen to remain in Bangladesh to look after his mother. While many assumed she might have to live alone in the country, Roni decided to stay by her side and care for her.
Although he could have built a life for himself abroad, he chose to prioritise his mother’s well-being.
Today is Roni’s birthday, although he prefers to keep the occasion simple rather than arrange a special celebration.
Speaking about her son, Shabnam said she feels deeply proud of the care and affection he shows her.
“As a mother, I am proud of my only child, Roni, whose birthday is today. Times have changed, and we often hear stories about how children treat their parents. In that regard, my Roni is a gem. He never lets me suffer and is devoted to me. Today is the birthday of my beloved son. Please keep him in your prayers,” she said.
The actress said she spends most of her time with Roni and follows current affairs through television and social media.
However, she has little hope of returning to the big screen because of her declining health.
“To be honest, I spend my time with my son. Sometimes I watch films and the news on television, and I get updates on various issues through Facebook. That helps me stay somewhat informed about what is happening at home and abroad. But I may not act in another film in this lifetime. My health is no longer what it used to be, and I am constantly dealing with one illness or another,” she said.
Shabnam’s last film appearance was in ‘Ammajan’, directed by Kazi Hayat. The actress is also set to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award at this year’s National Film Awards.
The government has already issued the official notification, although the award ceremony date has yet to be announced.
