Another consignment of 60,802 tonnes of wheat from the United States has reached Bangladesh.
A bulk carrier named MV SPAR ARIES reached the outer anchorage near Kutubdia around 4:00am on Monday, carrying 60,802 metric tons of wheat.
According to officials, samples from the shipment will be collected for quality inspection prior to the commencement of unloading.
Ali Akbar, CEO of Seven Seas Shipping Line and the local shipping and logistics agent for the Ministry of Food, said the cargo departed from the US port of Corpus Christi.
“Under the first phase of the G2G Agreement No. 1, a total of about 240,000 tonnes of wheat will arrive in four vessels. This is the second shipment,” he said.
The first consignment, which arrived on 25 October carrying 56,950 tonnes, has already been fully unloaded.
Sources said the remaining two vessels will reach Bangladesh in the coming weeks. Once the quality checks are completed, the wheat will be moved to state warehouses and later distributed nationwide through the Ministry of Food to strengthen the government’s public food distribution network.
Rakibul Hasan, Silo Superintendent of the Directorate General of Food (DGF), said: “A vessel carrying US wheat has arrived. Our team will collect samples from the ship for laboratory testing. If everything is in order, unloading will begin soon. Part of the wheat will be lightered at Chittagong Port, while the rest will be discharged at Narayanganj, and possibly Mongla as well.”
The shipment follows a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in Dhaka on July 20 between the DGF and US Wheat Associates (USW), the marketing arm for American wheat exporters.
As outlined in the five-year G2G agreement, Bangladesh will annually import 700,000 tonnes of US wheat, securing a consistent flow of premium-quality grain for domestic needs while sustaining export opportunities for American producers.
Md Abul Hasanath Humayun Kabir, Director General of the DGF, signed the agreement on behalf of Bangladesh, while Joe Sowers, Regional Vice President of USW for South & Southeast Asia, represented the United States.
