Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has insisted he has no intention of resigning, but acknowledged that achieving positive results is essential to maintaining his position at Old Trafford. The Portuguese coach faces mounting pressure following a disastrous start to the season.
United were eliminated from the League Cup after a shock second-round defeat to fourth-tier Grimsby Town and failed to qualify for European football following a disappointing 15th-place finish in last season’s Premier League.
The scrutiny on Amorim has intensified as his side sits 14th in the table, eight points behind leaders Liverpool, with just seven points from six matches. In 33 league games in charge, the 40-year-old has overseen nine wins, 17 defeats and seven draws.
Speaking ahead of Saturday’s home game against promoted Sunderland, Amorim said: “No, that is a decision of the board. I cannot do that [resign]. Sometimes I feel frustrated when we lose games, especially when momentum is created but lost. It hurts not only me, but also the players and staff.
“But it is not my decision, and it would be hard to leave if I haven’t done everything to continue my career here. It is a dream to be at this club, and I want to fight for it. Right now, losing games is what pains me, not the fear of losing my job.”
Amorim added that he is not naive about the challenges of managing a club of United’s stature: “We understand that results are crucial to continue the project. Balancing expectations at a club with this size, its sponsors and dual ownership is extremely difficult, and there will come a point when it becomes impossible for everyone.”
