Amnesty International has welcomed the decision by Bangladeshi authorities to bring 15 serving army officers before a court, facing charges related to enforced disappearances and torture allegedly committed during the previous government’s tenure.
This marks the first time military personnel in Bangladesh have been formally charged in connection with enforced disappearance cases, representing a significant step towards accountability and justice for victims, it added.
In a Facebook post, Amnesty International underscored the importance of the ongoing judicial proceedings adhering strictly to international human rights standards.
The rights organisation urged the government to ensure that all accused receive fair trials with due process safeguards, and stressed the necessity of conducting these trials in civilian courts.
Additionally, Amnesty called on authorities to refrain from applying the death penalty in these cases in accordance with international human rights obligations.
