A defamation lawsuit seeking Tk100 crore has been filed against Mufti Amir Hamza, the Jamaat-e-Islami lawmaker for Kushtia-3, for allegedly calling BNP leader Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku an “atheist” and “anti-Islamic.”
Advocate Nazmul Islam, the former general secretary of Sadar Upazila BNP, filed the case on Monday at the Sirajganj Sadar Thana Cognizance Court.
According to the plaintiff, the legal action follows a speech by Jamaat leader Amir Hamza in which he publicly labelled Tuku – a member of the BNP National Standing Committee and former minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources – as an atheist.
Nazmul Islam stated that these remarks have caused a defamation of Tk100 crore to the reputation of the BNP leader. “I have filed the case under Section 500 of the Penal Code to seek justice for such propaganda against our beloved leader,” the plaintiff told reporters.
Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Suman Karmakar took the case into cognizance on Monday afternoon.
