Australia captain Alyssa Healy has announced that she will retire from international cricket in March. Her career will end after the home series against India.
The 35 year old wicketkeeper batter has served Australia for 15 years. She made her debut as a teenager and stayed at the top for more than a decade.
Healy has played close to 300 matches in all formats. She scored over 7,000 international runs and completed 275 dismissals behind the stumps.
She said the upcoming India series will be her last for Australia. She added that she still loves playing for her country, but feels the competitive edge is no longer the same. She said the time feels right to step away. Healy also said wearing the green and gold has been a great honour and she is thankful for one final series.
Healy took over as full time captain in 2023 after Meg Lanning stepped down. One of her biggest moments as captain came when Australia beat England 16 nil in a historic home series.
She is known as one of the most powerful batters and best wicketkeepers in the game. During her career, she won eight World Cup titles with Australia.
Cricket Australia chief Todd Greenberg praised her impact on the sport. He said Healy is one of the greatest players the game has seen and thanked her for a career that inspired many and helped change the game.
Healy is the niece of former Australian Test star Ian Healy. She is also married to Australia fast bowler Mitchell Starc.
She recently worked in commentary during the men’s Ashes series and is expected to move into broadcasting after retirement.
The February to March series against India includes three T20 matches, two one day games and one Test in Perth. Healy will take part only in the one day matches and the Test.
