Police in New York have detained a member of the United States chapter of the Awami League’s youth wing Jubo League for allegedly throwing eggs at National Citizen Party (NCP) Member Secretary Akhter Hossen outside John F Kennedy International Airport.
Hossen, who is part of the delegation led by Interim Government Chief Dr Muhammad Yunus to the United Nations General Assembly, was confronted by a group of Awami League activists shortly after his arrival. During the confrontation, eggs were hurled at him as he exited the terminal.
According to local sources, the New York Police Department (NYPD) made the arrest shortly after the incident by analysing video footage. However, authorities have not released the name of the detained individual.
The attack, which took place outside the John F Kennedy International Airport as Bangladeshi political figures arrived for the UN General Assembly, sparked strong condemnation from the NCP. The party has announced a protest march to be held at 4pm Tuesday in Dhaka’s Shahbagh area. A post on the party’s official Facebook page has also called for simultaneous protest rallies at district and upazila levels across the country.
Following the incident, a post on Akhtar Hossen’s verified Facebook page read: “We were never afraid of Hasina’s bullets. Why should broken eggs matter? We have never compromised with injustice, and we never will. The trial of ‘killer Hasina’ will take place on the soil of Bangladesh, Inshallah.”
The arrest comes amid growing political tensions surrounding the upcoming national elections in Bangladesh and follows a series of confrontations between rival groups abroad.
