National Citizen Party (NCP) member secretary Akhter Hossen on Sunday issued a strong warning against the harassment of women, saying those involved would face severe consequences if his party came to power.
“Even yesterday, women were attacked and harassed in our area. We are saying clearly: Do not target women,” he said while addressing a roadside election rally for the Rangpur-4 constituency in Kaunia. “If anyone does, we will hang them one by one from trees,” he added.
Speaking as the chief guest, Akhter Hossen said Bangladesh had emerged from years of repression marked by enforced disappearances, killings, and oppression, but remained plagued by corruption, bribery, and what he described as “state conspiracies”. He said the newly formed 11-party unity alliance, which includes Jamaat-e-Islami and the NCP, aims to reform governance and bring public services directly to people’s doorsteps.
Chairman of NCP’s Election Steering Committee, Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan, alleged that past governments led by the Awami League and BNP had presided over decades of exploitation. He said the 11-party alliance would ensure justice for past killings and establish good governance if elected. He also reiterated commitments to the Teesta Master Plan and regional development.
NCP chief organizer for the southern region, Hasanat Abdullah, said the party had not entered the election with funds from extortion or illegal activities. He urged voters to reject candidates who distribute goods during campaigns and instead support long-term reforms.
The rally was chaired by Jatiyo Chhatra Shakti Central President Zahid Ahsan, with several NCP and alliance leaders also addressing the gathering.
