The fire that broke out at the Cargo Village of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka has been fully brought under control, according to the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism.
In an official statement signed by Tarikul Islam, Information and Public Relations officer of the ministry, it was confirmed that no casualties have been reported in the incident.
Kawser, spokesperson for the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB), confirmed that flight operations have resumed at 9pm.
Talha Bin Jasim, spokesperson for the Fire Service’s media cell, announced that the blaze was completely extinguished by 9:18 pm on Saturday.
The blaze reportedly began around 2:15pm and affected a section of the airport’s import cargo facility, where a significant quantity of flammable goods, such as chemicals, garments, and electronics, was stored.
Authorities said the fire was brought control following prompt and coordinated efforts by the Fire Service and Civil Defence, working closely with airport authorities. All flight operations, which were temporarily suspended due to the fire, resumed at 9pm after 6hrs.
The Adviser to the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism has been at the airport throughout the day, overseeing the situation and coordinating with all relevant agencies.
The ministry further stated that an official investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the fire. Measures will be taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Authorities also expressed their gratitude to passengers and the public for their patience and cooperation during the emergency.
Meanwhile, the fire was first reported around 2:15pm. A total of 37 firefighting units had engaged in battling the blaze. Military firefighting equipment had also been activated on-site as part of a coordinated response.
In addition to the Fire Service, the airport’s own fire unit, teams from the Bangladesh Army Air, Force, Navy had responded swiftly and launched a coordinated firefighting operation.
