A Dhaka court on Wednesday placed television actor Zaher Alvi, also known as Md Niamat Ullah Bhuiyan, on a two-day remand in a case filed over the alleged abetment of his wife’s death.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Albiruni Mir passed the order after a hearing, state prosecutor Harun Or Rashid said.

Police had sought a 10-day remand for the actor. The application was filed on 21 June by Inspector Md Abdul Malek of the Detective Branch’s Mirpur Division.

According to the remand petition, Alvi allegedly posted insulting and mentally abusive comments about his wife, Ikra, on social media. Investigators also alleged that he posted a photograph with another woman on 27 February along with remarks considered provocative despite being married.

Police told the court that further interrogation was necessary to uncover the circumstances surrounding the case and identify other individuals allegedly involved.

After hearing both sides, the court granted a two-day remand. Defence lawyers had sought bail and opposed the remand petition.

Earlier, on 18 June, Alvi surrendered before the court of Metropolitan Magistrate Kamal Uddin and applied for bail. The court rejected the plea and sent him to jail.

The case stems from an incident on 28 February when Ikra was found hanging from a ceiling fan at her residence in Mirpur DOHS.

Family members rushed her to Kurmitola General Hospital, where doctors declared her dead.

Later that night, her father, Kabir Hayat Khan, filed a case with Pallabi Police Station, alleging that prolonged family disputes and various forms of abuse had driven his daughter to take her own life.

Alvi and Ikra married in 2010 and have a son.

In connection with the same case, Alvi’s mother, Nasrin Sultana Sheuli, surrendered before a court on 4 June and was granted bail.
