As a teenager, your skin can sometimes feel completely out of control. One day it’s smooth, and the next, a pimple appears out of nowhere. You try new skincare routines, switch serums and follow every TikTok tip, yet nothing seems to work.

During puberty, hormones surge, causing your skin to produce more sebum, a type of oil. Most of it sits around your forehead, nose and chin, which is why pimples often appear there first. For many teens, it’s the first time they’re dealing with acne, and it can feel like your body is working against you.

While there’s no magic cure but there are simple habits that can help your skin be smooth and healthy. Here’s how you can take care of your skin along the way.

Cleanse gently, not harshly

Wash your face twice a day, once in the morning and once before bed. Use a gentle cleanser and massage it softly into your skin, no harsh scrubbing. Over-washing only irritates the skin and can make pimples worse. A silicone face massager can help remove dirt more effectively without being rough.

Hands off your face!

As tempting as it is, avoid popping pimples. Squeezing them pushes bacteria deeper, causing swelling, redness and even scars. Try not to touch your face during the day and always wash your hands before applying creams or makeup.

Sleeping in makeup clogs pores and invites new breakouts. Always remove it before bed. Look for “non-comedogenic” or “non-acnegenic” products designed not to block pores.

Keep hair and accessories clean

Your hair carries oil and dirt that can transfer to your skin. Keep it away from your face and wash it regularly. The same goes for caps and hats, they can easily collect oil, sweat and bacteria.

Change pillowcases often

Pillowcases absorb oil and dirt from your skin and hair every night. Changing them at least twice a week prevents bacteria from building up and transferring back to your face.

Keep it simple

You don’t need a dozen products. A mild cleanser and a light moisturiser are usually enough. Avoid toners and serums with harsh chemicals.

Nourish from within

Healthy skin starts inside. Eating plenty of fruits and vegetables ensures you’re getting the vitamins and antioxidants your body needs to keep your skin glowing. Make sure you stay hydrated. Keep a water bottle with you throughout the day.

Most importantly, don’t stress. Stress releases hormones that can trigger breakouts. Everyone’s skin goes through ups and downs during their teen years. With patience, care, and consistency, things get better. Remember to treat your skin kindly and it will thank you.
