Jannik Sinner secured his fourth title of the season on Sunday, staging a comeback to defeat Alexander Zverev in the final of the Vienna Open. The Italian lost the first set but rallied to claim a 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory, earning the 22nd trophy of his career.
It is Sinner’s second triumph in Vienna, having previously lifted the title in 2023, and extends his winning streak on indoor hard courts to 21 matches ahead of next week’s final Masters 1000 event of the year in Paris.
The top seed, however, faced a tough start as world number three Zverev, who had won four of their seven previous encounters, broke early in the first set to seize the advantage.
“It was such a difficult start in this final for me,” Sinner said. “I went a break down, had some chances in the first set but couldn’t use them. He was serving very well, but I just tried to stick there mentally and play my best tennis when it came.”
Sinner responded by storming 3-0 ahead in the second set, forcing a decider against the 2021 champion. Zverev saved two break points in the fifth game of the third set, but Sinner maintained the pressure despite dealing with a thigh issue, his first event back since retiring with cramp at the Shanghai Masters.
At 5-all, Sinner produced a blistering backhand down the line and won a lengthy rally to secure the decisive break. A routine hold in the following game sealed the win for the 24-year-old, who has reached the final in eight of his ten tournaments this season. His other titles this year include victories at the Australian Open, Wimbledon, and Beijing.
“The third set was a bit of a rollercoaster, but I was feeling the ball very well at times, so I tried to push, and I’m very happy of course to win another title,” Sinner added. “It’s very special.”
