A housewife was hacked to death with a sharp weapon in Shailkupa upazila of Jhenaidah district early Sunday. The incident took place at Purbo Paikpara village under Manoharpur Union.
The deceased was identified as Lima Begum, 28, wife of Abdur Rob of the same village and daughter of Montaj Biswas from Kamarna village in the upazila.
She was the mother of two children. Police have detained her father-in-law, Mukul Mondol, in connection with the murder.
According to Lima’s husband, Abdur Rob, the incident occurred when Lima went outside to perform ablution for Fajr prayers. “While she was walking in the yard, Mukul Mondol suddenly attacked her with a kitchen cleaver. Hearing her screams, we rushed to the spot and took her to Shailkupa Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared her dead,” he said.
He further claimed that Mukul Mondol has been mentally unstable for some time.
Lima’s brother, Sagor Biswas, said, “None of our family members were present during the incident. A proper investigation is necessary to uncover the full details. We are not sure if she had any conflict with her husband’s family.”
Dr Arifur Rahman, a physician at Shailkupa Upazila Health Complex, said, “The woman was brought dead to the hospital. She had a deep cut on her upper chest, likely caused by a sharp weapon. Excessive bleeding and internal organ damage appear to have caused her death.”
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Shailkupa Police Station, Md Masum Khan, said, “The accused father-in-law has been detained. The family claims he is mentally unstable, but we have not yet found any clinical evidence of that. The body has been sent to the morgue for autopsy, and legal procedures are underway.”
