Gonoforum signed the July National Charter on Sunday after the National Consensus Commission (NCC) agreed to retain the Proclamation of Independence in the constitution, a key demand of the party.
The charter signing ceremony was held at the LD Hall of the National Parliament.
The party had attended the charter signing event the previous day but refrained from signing due to opposition to the initial proposal to remove the Proclamation of Independence from the constitution.
The National Consensus Commission made last-minute amendments to the charter, including the crucial decision to retain the Proclamation of Independence. Prof Ali Riaz, vice-president of the commission, explained that this change was made in response to requests from several political parties. Four left-leaning parties— the Communist Party of Bangladesh, Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal (Basod), Bangladesh JSD, and Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal (Marxist)— had strongly opposed the removal of both the Declaration of Independence (March 26, 1971) and the Proclamation of Independence (April 10, 1971) from the constitution.
They also objected to the exclusion of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s iconic March 7 speech. The leftist parties have further raised additional demands and boycotted the charter signing event.
Four left-leaning parties — the Communist Party of Bangladesh, Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal (Basod), Bangladesh JSD, and Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal (Marxist) — along with Gono Forum, had objected to the recommendations for removal of the Declaration of Independence (March 26, 1971) and the Proclamation of Independence.
