Election Commissioner Anwarul Islam has stated that the ‘Shapla’ symbol cannot be allotted as it is not included in the official list of symbols under the constitutional law and election rules.
He made this statement while talking to reporters at Sylhet Police Lines after a training session aimed at enhancing police efficiency to ensure smooth election duties.
EC Anwarul Islam said, “Symbol allocation is done under the constitution and election regulations. The ‘Shapla’ symbol is not on the list, so it cannot be allotted.”
Meanwhile, on Sunday, Hasnat Abdullah, the chief organiser of the National Citizens Party (NCP), staged a protest at the Election Commission in Dhaka over the ‘Shapla’ symbol.
After their demand was rejected again, he criticised the Election Commission for ‘acting arbitrarily,’ accusing them of creating a situation where “fair elections will not be possible.”
Regarding the upcoming national elections, EC Anwarul said, “There is no situation that would lead to the election being postponed until February. The election will be held before Ramadan.”
He expressed confidence that all forces are prepared for the election and that law and order will not be a challenge.
EC Anwarul added, “There will be no controversial elections like in the past. With everyone’s cooperation, a fair and participatory election will be held.”
