European Union (EU) Ambassador to Bangladesh Michael Miller has termed the signing of the July National Charter 2025 a “crucial milestone” toward building political understanding and advancing democratic reforms.
In a Facebook post shared after attending the signing ceremony on Friday, Ambassador Miller said he was “pleased to witness the formal adoption of a document that outlines a broad national consensus for essential reforms.”
He noted that the event “marks a meaningful step in Bangladesh’s ongoing political transition, reflecting unity of purpose as the nation looks ahead to the 2026 elections.”
The charter signed by representatives from 25 political parties, including the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami aims to establish a shared framework for political cooperation and institutional reform.
Miller’s presence at the signing underscores the European Union’s sustained engagement in Bangladesh’s democratic and governance processes. The EU has long supported Bangladesh in strengthening transparency, accountability, and institutional resilience.
In recent statements, the EU reaffirmed its readiness to assist Bangladesh in ensuring that the next general election is free, fair, and participatory.
This support may include technical collaboration and potential election observation missions, in line with the EU’s broader commitment to democracy, good governance, and sustainable development.
