A Gaza ceasefire agreement has been signed at an international conference held in Sharm al-Sheikh, Egypt. The United States, Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey have signed a joint declaration regarding this matter.
At the Gaza Peace Conference on Monday, US President Donald Trump, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, and the leaders of Qatar and Turkey signed this joint declaration.
News agencies AP and Reuters report that over 30 countries’ leaders, including Trump and Sisi, participated in this conference. This Egypt peace conference was organised amidst an atmosphere of prisoner exchanges by both sides for a ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinian armed group Hamas.
In the first phase on Monday, approximately two thousand prisoners were released from Israeli prisons in exchange for 20 hostages held by Hamas. This has led to thousands of people in Tel Aviv and Palestine being seen celebrating.
The main goal of the conference was to establish peace in the Gaza region and resolve the humanitarian crisis there. Trump, Sisi, and other leaders gathered to highlight the need for international support for the reconstruction of the Gaza region.
In his speech, Trump said, “Peace in Gaza could be a significant milestone not just for the Middle East, but for the entire world.”
According to the agreement, a ceasefire has been implemented in the Gaza region, and the international community has pledged $53 billion in funding. This money will be used to invest in various sectors, including the reconstruction of Gaza, as well as health, education, and infrastructure development.
Emphasizing a two-state solution as the ultimate goal, Egyptian President Sisi said, “This is the last opportunity for Palestinians to establish an independent state.”
Although Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Hamas representatives were not present at the conference, other international leaders at the conference pledged to work together to establish peace in Gaza.
Alongside worldwide support, the implementation of this peace process now faces difficult challenges. There are concerns regarding the political situation in the Gaza region and the support of the local population. However, due to the initiatives of Egypt and the international community, it is hoped that a new horizon for establishing peace will open up.
