The Maldives and Bangladesh have reaffirmed their shared commitment to deepen bilateral relations and expand cooperation across multiple sectors. Both countries expressed optimism about increased trade and investment opportunities in the coming years.
Dr Md Nazmul Islam, the newly appointed High Commissioner of Bangladesh to the Maldives, formally presented his Letter of Credence to Maldivian President Dr Mohamed Muizzu at a ceremony held on 5 October at the Presidential Palace in Malé.
During the meeting, President Muizzu commended Bangladesh for its continued cooperation in key sectors such as human resource development, higher education, healthcare, and trade.
He expressed confidence that “the excellent relations between the two countries will continue to strengthen, with commercial engagements expected to expand further.”
Highlighting the strong people-to-people ties between the two nations, President Muizzu emphasised the importance of fostering greater cultural and economic exchanges.
High Commissioner Dr Nazmul Islam thanked the Maldivian government for hosting a large Bangladeshi expatriate workforce that contributes significantly to both nations’ economies.
He also reiterated Bangladesh’s commitment to enhancing trade and investment partnerships, particularly through growing transshipment activities via Maldivian ports.
Both sides agreed to explore new areas of collaboration in agriculture, defense, education, and human resource development, while also discussing opportunities for joint initiatives in regional and international forums.
Diplomatic ties between Bangladesh and the Maldives were established on 22 September 1974, marking over five decades of close friendship and cooperation.
