Former Industries Minister and former Member of Parliament for Narsingdi-4 constituency, Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun (75), has passed away while undergoing treatment in custody.

He died at 8:10am on Monday in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

According to the ICU duty doctor, he was admitted to the ICU from Keraniganj Central Jail in Dhaka. Later, at 8:10 am on Monday, Nurul Majid passed away.

The hospital’s director, Brigadier General Mohammad Asaduzzaman, said that after being brought to the hospital on Saturday evening, he was admitted to the medicine department. As his condition deteriorated, he was quickly transferred to the ICU.

Earlier, on Thursday, Nurul Majid was arrested from Gulshan in the capital in connection with a case filed over killing, attacks, and vandalism during the anti-discrimination student movement in Narsingdi. He was then held at Keraniganj Central Jail, where he suddenly fell ill and was admitted to the ICU of Dhaka Medical on Saturday.

Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun was first elected Member of Parliament from Narsingdi-4 (Monohardi-Belabo) as an independent candidate in 1986. He was later elected as an Awami League candidate in 2008, 2014, 2019, and most recently in 2024.

He served as the Industries Minister for the first time in 2019, and again for the second time in 2024.
