Train operations resumed five and a half hours after the derailment of a coach of the ‘Panchagarh Express’ in Bhangura, Pabna, restoring rail communication between Dhaka and 16 districts of northern Bangladesh.
Railway sources reported that the suspension of services caused immense hardship for hundreds of passengers from early morning. The disruption impacted the schedules of numerous passenger and freight trains traveling between Dhaka and northern Bangladesh.
At around 9:30am on Monday, after the derailed coach was recovered, the Burimari Express, which had been waiting at Chatmohar station, departed for Dhaka. Subsequently, the Panchagarh Express left for its destination at 10:30am.
Nazim Kayser, Pakshi West Zone Divisional Engineer-2, confirmed that normal train operations resumed once recovery work was completed.
The incident occurred around 4:00am on Monday when three coaches of the Dhaka-bound Panchagarh Express derailed in Bhangura, Pabna, suspending rail communication between Dhaka and northern Bangladesh. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.
Recovery operations began at 7:30am, three and a half hours after the derailment.
Passengers stated that the Dhaka-bound Panchagarh Express left around 11:30pm on Sunday. At approximately 4:00am, as it neared Bhangura upazila, three coaches derailed with a loud noise. The incident caused panic, with over a thousand passengers fleeing the train. Bhangura police quickly arrived at the scene and ensured the safety of all passengers.
