Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) on Wednesday seized $30,000 while being smuggled into India through the Madra border in Satkhira’s Kalaroa upazila.
The seizure was made on Wednesday night at Tetultala, about 250 yards inside Bangladesh territory from the zero line.
Acting on a tip-off, a patrol team of Madra BOP launched an operation after receiving intelligence that smugglers were attempting to move a large consignment of US dollars across the border.
As the team advanced, a suspect carrying a polythene bag was challenged. He dropped the bag and fled towards India, leaving behind three bundles of $100 notes worth $30,000, equivalent to Tk 36.37 lakh.
Lieutenant Colonel Ashraful Haque, commanding officer of BGB Battalion 33 in Satkhira, confirmed the recovery.
He said the seized dollars would be deposited with the Satkhira Treasury Office on Thursday following court directives and due legal procedures.
