The University of Sussex, a leading UK institution founded in 1961, has announced the launch of the £4,000 Sussex Bangladesh Scholarship to support Bangladeshi students pursuing postgraduate studies.
The initiative reflects Sussex’s commitment to fostering academic excellence and expanding opportunities for Bangladeshi students at a world-class institution.
Bangladesh has emerged as one of Sussex’s fastest-growing student communities. In 2025, postgraduate applications from Bangladesh increased by 27 percent, while undergraduate enrolments grew by 50 percent.
The surge underscores the growing demand among Bangladeshi students for globally recognized, research-driven education in the UK.
To strengthen its relationship with alumni in Bangladesh, the University of Sussex recently hosted a gathering at the Sheraton Hotel in Banani, Dhaka, attended by over 40 alumni.
The event provided a platform for graduates now leading in public service, academia, and industry to connect with current offer holders, offering mentorship and professional guidance.
Discussions also highlighted Sussex’s expanding presence in Bangladesh and the role of alumni in supporting future students through scholarships, research collaborations, and mentorship.
“It was a privilege to join our offer holders and alumni in Dhaka,” said Dr C. Rashaad Shabab, Associate Dean for Education and Students at Sussex Business School.
“The energy in the room reflected the pride of our graduates and the growing confidence Bangladeshi students place in Sussex. We are proud to count leaders such as Professor C. R. Abrar among our distinguished alumni, and it is inspiring to see emerging leaders eager to follow in their footsteps.”
Reflecting on his time at Sussex, Professor C R Abrar, Advisor to the Ministry of Education and a Sussex alumnus, said, “Sussex shaped not only my academic journey but also my lifelong commitment to student-centered learning and public service.
The university’s culture of debate, diversity, and activism left an indelible mark on me, and I see the same spirit inspiring the aspiring Bangladeshi scholars today.”
