Shafiqul Alam, press secretary to Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, has condemned the attack on Gono Odhikar Parishad President Nurul Haque Nur, who remains in intensive care unit of DMCH after sustaining serious injuries in a violent clash in Kakrail on Friday night.
In a Facebook post, Shafiqul described the assault as a “heinous attack” and praised Nur for his role in defending justice and democratic values. “I strongly condemn the heinous attack on Nurul Haque Nur, the leader of Gono Odhikar Parishad and a courageous voice of our time,” he wrote.
He recalled Nur’s leadership during the 2018 anti-quota reform movement, terming it a “historic role” that inspired a generation to rise against injustice. He also pointed to Nur’s activism during the July uprising, saying Nur and his party “stood with the people, embodying the struggle for democracy, accountability, and dignity.”
Shafiqul further alleged that Nur had faced “brutal torture in custody” during the July movement, calling it a grave human rights violation under the “fascist Hasina regime.” He expressed confidence that the authorities would conduct a proper investigation into the latest incident.
Nur is currently under observation at Dhaka Medical College Hospital with a head injury and fractured nasal bone. Dhaka Medical College Hospital(DMCH) authorities said a high-level medical board has been formed to monitor his treatment.
