Gono Odhikar Parishad President Nurul Haque Nur, who sustained serious injuries during Friday night’s clashes in Kakrail, is undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) under the supervision of a high-level medical board.
DMCH Director Brigadier General Md Asaduzzaman told reporters on Saturday morning that Nur had suffered a head injury and a fractured nasal bone, which caused heavy bleeding. “The bleeding has been controlled and he has regained consciousness. However, we cannot declare him out of danger for at least the next 48 hours,” he said.
Hospital authorities confirmed that the medical board was formed late Friday and is scheduled to review Nur’s condition again on Saturday. He remains admitted in the Intensive Care Unit.
The injuries occurred when a procession of Gono Odhikar Parishad passed near the Jatiya Party’s central office in Kakrail, triggering clashes. Conflicting accounts have since emerged, with each side blaming the other for the violence.
Gono Odhikar Parishad General Secretary Rashed Khan alleged that law enforcement and military personnel launched an unprovoked assault while the party was preparing for a press conference around 9:30pm. “Our president was severely injured in the attack. More than a hundred activists were hurt, and six, including Nur, were admitted to DMCH,” he said.
The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Directorate, in a statement, said law enforcement first tried to calm both sides but some activists ignored repeated warnings. According to the ISPR, protesters attempted torch processions, hurled bricks and stones, and tried to set fire to several structures. Law enforcers were forced to intervene, during which five Army personnel were injured.
As political condemnation spreads, Gono Odhikar Parishad has demanded a full investigation into the attack. Nationwide protests have erupted, further intensifying tensions in the run-up to the national elections.
