Students at Islamic University (IU) have gathered together for “March for Iucsu”, demanding roadmap for the establishment of the university’s central student union, IUCSU.
On Monday at around 2pm, students from various departments and political student organisations gathered at the Birshreshtha Hamidur Rahman Auditorium, situated on campus and met with the university’s Vice-Chancellor (VC), Professor Dr Nakeeb Mohammad Nasrullah.
During the meeting, the VC, along with Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Dr MA Yakub Ali, Proctor Professor Dr Shahinuzzaman, Student Advisor Professor Dr Obaidul Islam, former coordinator SM Sweet, IU Chhatra Dal convener Shahed Ahmed, Chhatra Shibir President Mahmudul Hasan, Islamic Chhatra Andolan President Ismail Hossain Rahat, Khilafat Chhatra Majlis President Sadek Khan, IUCSU Formation Movement’s Borhan Uddin, Rakibul Islam, and Sazzatullah Sheikh, as well as students and student leaders from various departments.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Nakeeb Mohammad Nasrullah remarked that forming a student council is easier for the other four universities because they already have legal frameworks in place. However, since Islamic University does not have a legal framework, discussions will be held with students on how to proceed.
He acknowledged that there would be challenges if the student council is not legally established, citing the legal settlement required for budgeting, similar to Dhaka University’s central budget.
He emphasised that the formation of IUCSU is a student demand that will be fulfilled. A representative team consisting of teachers and students will be formed to draft the council’s constitution, which will then be presented to the syndicate for approval.
If approved, it will be sent to the University Grants Commission (UGC) for further approval before going to the Ministry of Education and eventually to the Cabinet for legal clearance.
Former coordinator SM Sweet added that the “March for Iucsu” had successfully united various platforms, and that the VC has outlined a plan for IUCSU elections to be held by November 15. A committee will be formed to finalise the council’s constitution, and they hope to conclude all tasks within the given timeline.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Nakeeb Mohammad Nasrullah also expressed his expectation that the committee will be formed next week and that elections will take place by mid-November.
