BNP leader Selim Bhuiyan acquitted in graft case

A court in Dhaka has acquitted the Selim Bhuiyan, organising secretary of Cumilla division unit of the BNP, in a case filed over acquiring illegal wealth worth Tk 1.31 crore and concealing information of Tk1.9 crore.

Dhaka Special Judge Court-1 Judge Abul Kashem passed the verdict on Thursday in presence of the BNP leader.

Defence lawyer Zainul Abedin Mesbah said Selim has been acquitted from the case as the charges brought against Selim were not proven.

Earlier, on June 20, 2019, Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Assistant Director Md Abdul Wadud filed the case with Ramna model police station.

According to the case documents, Selim concealed information of Tk1,09,75,932 in his wealth statement submitted to the ACC. Besides, the anti-graft agency uncovered movable and immovable assets worth Tk4, 43, 48,413 in his name and of the amount, assets worth Tk1,30,10,883 were found to be beyond his known sources of income.

ACC submitted the charge sheet to the court on February 13, 2022, after completing the investigation and on August 24, 2023, the court framed charges against Selim.
