The history, heritage and human stories of Sonargaon will return to television as popular magazine programme ‘Ityadi’ presents a special compilation featuring highlights from its earlier episodes.
The programme, recorded in October 2021 at the historic Sonargaon upazila in Narayanganj, will air on Bangladesh Television on Friday, 6 November, at 8pm, following the Bangla news bulletin.
The special edition will combine selected segments from the Sonargaon episode and several other past editions.
Thousands of spectators attended the original recording, held at the Bangladesh Folk Arts and Crafts Foundation.
The programme’s stage stood in front of the historic Bara Sardar Bari, while invited guests sat around a sculpture inspired by ‘Sangram’, the famous oil painting by artist Zainul Abedin.
The compilation features three main songs. One explores the human desire to reconnect with one’s roots and brings together two acclaimed singers from different musical traditions, Kumar Bishwajit and Chishti Baul. Mohammad Rafiquzzaman wrote the lyrics, while Ibrar Tipu composed and arranged the music.
Another song introduces the history and heritage of Sonargaon through lyrics by Moniruzzaman Palash, accompanied by a dance performance by more than 50 local dancers.
The programme also revisits a song from an episode aired in June 2003. Written by Liton Adhikari Rintu and sung by Santu, the track recalls an artiste who was once a regular face on ‘Ityadi’ for his distinctive performances.
Beyond music, the compilation brings together several reports highlighting history, culture and social issues. Two informative segments explore the heritage of Narayanganj and Sonargaon, including the Bangladesh Folk Arts and Crafts Foundation.
Another report follows Shahed Kayes, a determined young man working to bring education to disadvantaged children in Sonargaon. The programme also features Khairul Alam, a nature enthusiast dedicated to caring for trees and raising environmental awareness.
A follow-up report revisits an innovative school built in the haor region of Kishoreganj in October 2019.
Another human-interest segment highlights the hardships faced by residents of Gabura union in Shyamnagar, Satkhira, where access to safe drinking water remains a serious challenge.
The compilation also includes satirical sketches drawn from earlier episodes, addressing various social irregularities and contemporary issues.
Regular segments such as the audience participation section, Nani-Nati, Mama-Bhagney and Chithipatra will also return.
Hanif Sanket has written, directed and presented the programme. The special compilation is sponsored by Keya Cosmetics and will be broadcast on Bangladesh Television.
