The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) has condemned the detention of its founder Abhijeet Dipke and other leaders ahead of their protest in New Delhi.
In a post on X, the party criticised Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah over the detentions, accusing the authorities of preventing its leaders from joining the demonstration.
According to the CJP, Dipke and two other prominent leaders of the movement, Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka, were detained from inside their plane shortly after their flight landed in New Delhi on Saturday. The three were travelling to the capital to participate in the rally.
CJP expressed its anger over the incident, using the words “Shame on you, Modi, Shah” to denounce the detentions.
The detentions came amid heightened security in the capital ahead of the CJP’s planned demonstration at Jantar Mantar, where the party intended to demand the resignation of Indian Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
However, the Delhi Police had denied permission for the protest. Authorities had also introduced extensive security measures to prevent an unauthorised gathering at Jantar Mantar.
Meanwhile, YouTuber Dhruv Rathee and Ratna Singh, head of the CJP’s legal cell, were also detained at their homes.
Apart from the leaders, police detained more than 1,000 suspected protesters from different areas overnight.
Metro Stations Shut, Trains Cancelled
Entry and exit services at 45 Delhi metro stations have been suspended, while dozens of trains have been cancelled as authorities seek to restrict the movement of protesters towards the demonstration site.
The Centre has deployed more than 20,000 personnel from the police and the Central Armed Police Forces to maintain law and order and prevent any escalation during the protest.
The extensive security arrangements, transport disruptions and detentions have heightened tensions between the authorities and the protest organisers.
With the CJP demanding the release of its detained leaders and the police enforcing restrictions on the unauthorised demonstration, the protest has become a major point of confrontation in the capital.
