Chief Whip of National Parliament Nurul Islam Moni said the deficit in measles vaccination in the country over the past two years has had a negative impact.
He added that the present government is having to manage the pressure of this situation created during the previous period.
He made these remarks on Friday while speaking as chief guest at the inaugural session of 8th National Conference and Annual General Meeting of Bangladesh Thyroid Society (BTS) at Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel in Dhaka.
The chief whip said the government is working to address the existing problems in health sector and ensure medical services for the public. He also mentioned that the present government has given special importance to the development of health sector.
He said the previous government caused extensive damage to various sectors of the country. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, with the advice and cooperation of Zubaida Rahman, has almost doubled the budget allocation to overhaul the health sector.
Alongside the health sector, the government is also working for the development of power and energy sector.
Emphasising the need to raise public awareness and research on thyroid disease, Nurul Islam Moni said the thyroid gland plays an important role in human growth, intellectual development, and regulating various bodily functions.
He added that everyone concerned, alongside doctors, must step forward to ensure prevention, early diagnosis, and advanced treatment of this disease.
The chief whip assured that he would personally take initiatives to assist in creating awareness and conducting research on thyroid issues.
He also mentioned that if there is an opportunity to take necessary initiatives in Parliament in this regard, he will try to implement them.
He expressed hope that improving the quality of life for people affected by thyroid disease is possible through the integration of education, innovation, and effective initiatives.
Wishing success for the conference, he expressed hope that the knowledge, experience, and recommendations gained from this event would play a significant role in improving the quality of healthcare in the country.
The function was presided over by Dr AKM Fazlul Bari, president of Bangladesh Thyroid Society and director of National Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Allied Sciences (NINMAS).
President of Doctors Association of Bangladesh Dr Harun Al Rashid, Chief Adviser of Bangladesh Thyroid Society Dr MA Karim, and President of Diabetic Association of Bangladesh Dr AK Azad Khan, were present as special guests.
General Secretary of BTS Dr Nasrin Sultana delivered the welcome address.
Founder President of the Society Fouzia Moslem, was also present at the function.
During the day-long conference, scientific discussions were held on modern methods of diagnosis and treatment of thyroid disease, thyroid cancer, thyroid problems during pregnancy, iodine deficiency diseases, and the relationship between thyroid disease and the heart.
A total of 12 oral research papers and 10 posters were presented at the conference.
