Former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal has been shown arrested in a murder case filed with Adabor Police Station in Dhaka.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ashraful Haque passed the order on Sunday, public prosecutor Muhammad Shamsuddoha Sumon confirmed.
The order came after Mohammad Tipu Sultan, an inspector of the DMP’s Tejgaon Division and the investigation officer of the case, filed a petition seeking to show Habibul arrested in the case.
According to the case documents, the incident occurred during the anti-discrimination student movement in 2024. The case was filed on 23 August that year.
The petition said Habibul served as chief election commissioner from 27 February 2023 to 5 September 2024. It alleged that during this period, he played a direct role in helping the then government return to power by holding the 2024 national election and damaging the image of the Election Commission.
It further said that it was necessary to show Habibul arrested in the case in the interest of a fair investigation and to uncover the main mystery surrounding the incident.
The former CEC is currently in jail after being arrested in a case filed over allegations of vote rigging and constitutional violations in connection with the national elections. DB police arrested him from Dhaka’s Moghbazar area on 25 June 2025. He faces allegations including forgery, providing false information to influence voting, and sedition.
The High Court granted him bail on 21 September, considering his age and physical complications, on the condition that he surrender his passport.
Later, following a petition by the state, the Appellate Division’s Chamber Court stayed the High Court’s bail order. The Appellate Division is scheduled to hear the matter on 26 October.
