Three school friends, all Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinees of Atipara Secondary School, were killed on the spot when a passenger bus ran over their motorcycle on the Dhaka-Barishal highway in Ujirpur upazila on Monday evening.
The tragic accident took place at around 6:30pm in the Atipara area along the highway.
The deceased were identified as Sourav Dhali, 14, son of Kabir Dhali and resident of Atipara village; Tawhid Islam, 13, of the same village; and Moustakin, 14, son of Monir Hossain of neighbouring Dhamsar village. Sourav Dhali was driving the motorcycle at the time of the collision.
Quoting local residents, Ujirpur Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (Investigation) Faruk Hossain said the three friends had gone out together on the motorcycle for a ride. A Dhaka-bound passenger bus belonging to Suravi Paribahan rammed the motorcycle in the Atipara area at around 6:30pm, killing motorcycle rider Sourav Dhali and pillions Moustakin and Tawhid on the spot.
Upon receiving information, personnel from the Ujirpur Fire Service and local police arrived at the scene and recovered the bodies. Police managed to seize the bus involved in the crash, although the driver and other staff managed to flee.
All vehicular movement on the highway remained suspended for nearly half an hour following the crash. Traffic flow was later restored after police arrived at the location and cleared the road.
OC (Investigation) Faruk Hossain added that legal action regarding the incident is currently underway.
