Surrounded by river waters and lush greenery, Dhadhar Char in Gazipur’s Kapasia offers a stunning natural landscape but lacks basic infrastructure needed to support growing tourist interest.
Located at the confluence of the Shitalakkhya and Brahmaputra rivers, the vast char features scenic views of boat movement, river waves and crop fields, making it an emerging attraction for nature lovers.
The char is locally known as “Majher Char” or “Maijhar Char” and has been included in the list of tourist spots prepared by the Kapasia upazila administration.
The char, located in Raniganj area of Kapasia upazila, covers around 250 acres. It is about 3km long and roughly half a kilometre wide. Viewed from a distance, its shape resembles a boat.
Surrounded by green trees, farmland and a peaceful environment, the char has already become an attraction for nature lovers. During the monsoon, the vast stretches of river water around the green char create a mesmerising view.
Travelling there by boat, visitors are captivated by the waters of the two rivers, waves and surrounding greenery.
However, the char currently lacks adequate facilities for tourists.
Visitors believe that alongside ensuring basic amenities such as safe boat services, seating areas, toilets, safe drinking water, waste management and security, protecting the natural environment of the char is also essential.
The char has various types of trees, farmland and fruit orchards. Alongside guava, mango, jackfruit and banana plantations, various agricultural products are cultivated there.
As a result, visitors can experience not only natural beauty but also the lifestyle of agriculture-dependent communities.
The appearance of Dhadhar Char changes with the seasons. During the monsoon, the green char surrounded by water becomes even more attractive. In winter, when the river water recedes, vast green fields and croplands become visible.
On holidays and during leisure time, visitors from different areas come here by boat to enjoy the scenic beauty.
Mohammad Mahabub Alam, a member of the Gazipur Rotary Club, told TIMES of Bangladesh, “The potential of Dhadhar Char has come to our attention. A guest house could be built there. If accommodation and opportunities for tourists to spend time are created, more people will become interested in visiting the place.”
Saying that he and several others had already visited the char, he added, “With support from the authorities and necessary approvals, anyone can take forward such an initiative.”
Taraganj School and College Principal Shamsul Huda Liton said, “With planned initiatives, government support and proper management, the peaceful environment of this area can create a unique experience for visitors.”
Former chairman of Kapasia Upazila Parishad Khandaker Azizur Rahman Pera said, “We want to develop Dhadar Char as a planned and aesthetically pleasing tourist destination. We are trying to take the necessary initiatives for this.”
Kapasia Upazila BNP President Shah Riazul Hannan Riaz said, “An initiative was taken earlier to develop Dhadhar Char as a tourist destination. An application was submitted in this regard during the previous caretaker government. We will once again apply to the relevant authorities.”
Kapasia Upazila Nirbahi Officer Hafizul Haque told TIMES, “We have a major plan centring on Dhadar Char. Soon, an initiative will be taken to develop a beautiful and planned tourist destination here, which will attract local visitors as well as tourists from different parts of the country.”
He said equal importance would be given to ensuring safe travel for tourists, improving communication facilities, ensuring the safety of boat movement, developing adequate infrastructure, providing safe drinking water, sanitation facilities and protecting the environment.
