A Jahangirnagar University student was allegedly abducted and robbed in Savar’s Palli Bidyut area, with the victim claiming that he was forced to pay Tk10,000 in ransom after being taken to an under-construction building and assaulted.
The student alleged that his mobile phone was taken from him on the pretext of making an urgent call, after which he was rendered unconscious using a spray.
He was later taken to a construction site, where he was beaten and asked to send money through bKash.
The incident reportedly took place on Thursday evening involving Rashidul Islam Ruso, a student of the 49th batch of the Chemistry Department at JU.
Ruso said he was on his way to a private tutoring session when a man in the Palli Bidyut area asked to use his mobile phone for an urgent call.
After receiving the phone, the man moved a short distance away, and several other people allegedly joined him, Ruso said.
According to his account, he was then sprayed and lost consciousness. Later, he was taken to an under-construction building in the Palashbari area, where he was physically assaulted.
He alleged that his mobile phone, wallet and wristwatch were also taken from him.
Ruso said the attackers later demanded Tk10,000 through bKash and threatened not to release him unless the money was paid.
Eventually, they took Tk7,000 through bKash from one of his friends and released him, he said.
“I requested them to return my mobile phone, but they threatened me. They said if I created trouble, they would hand me over to another group, which would create further problems,” Ruso said.
The student suspects that multiple individuals or an organised group may have been involved in the incident.
He also urged authorities to investigate whether similar incidents of abduction and robbery have taken place in Palli Bidyut and surrounding areas.
