Detectives have arrested two suspected muggers in connection with the death of school headteacher Ronjina Parveen, who died after falling from an auto‑rickshaw when muggers snatched her bag in front of the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.
Law enforcers also recovered the motorcycle used in the mugging, the looted items, and yaba tablets from the suspects.
Shafiqul Islam, additional police commissioner of Detective Branch of police, confirmed the arrests Wednesday, saying the duo was apprehended from an area in the capital.
On 29 August, Ronjina, headteacher of Bagbari Girls’ Government Primary School in Bogura, arrived in Dhaka to consult a doctor at Ispahani Islamia Eye Institute and Hospital in Farmgate.
After getting off at Gabtoli bus terminal early in the morning, she was travelling to the hospital in an auto‑rickshaw. As the vehicle approached the South Plaza of the parliament, muggers on a motorcycle pulled her bag from behind.
She fell from the auto‑rickshaw onto the road and sustained a severe head injury. She was taken to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
Following the incident, her family filed a case with Sher‑e‑Bangla Nagar Police Station on 30 August.
