Dr Aminur Rahman, an eminent public health researcher and Executive Director of the Centre for Injury Prevention and Research, Bangladesh (CIPRB), has received the King Edward VII Cup 2026 award.
The Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS) Commonwealth, a United Kingdom-based charity organisation governed by Royal Charter, honoured him with its highest service award for his outstanding global contributions to drowning prevention, read a press release.
Dr Stephen Beerman, deputy commonwealth president, presented the prize to Dr Rahman at the 16th World Conference on Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion (Safety 2026) in Cape Town, South Africa, on 3 September 2026.
Dr Rahman is the first Bangladeshi and one of 15 individuals from Commonwealth countries to receive this prestigious award since 1986 in recognition of extraordinary contributions to lifesaving. The award was originally introduced in 1903 and revived in 1985.
In addition to his leadership role at CIPRB, Dr Rahman serves as the Portfolio Director, Drowning Data and Information for the Royal Life Saving Society Commonwealth. Nationally, he contributed to the development of the National Drowning Prevention Strategy and Action Plan, endorsed by the Government of Bangladesh in June 2025.
Throughout his career, Dr Rahman has published more than 90 articles in peer-reviewed journals. He co-authored the World Health Organization (WHO) “World Report on Child Injury Prevention” (2008) and the book “Drowning – Prevention, Rescue, Treatment” (2014). Furthermore, he acted as one of the editors of the “Global Report on Drowning Prevention” (2014) and contributed to “Preventing drowning: an implementation guide” (2017).
Dr Rahman also received the Research Honour 2025 award and the HRH Prince Michael of Kent Certificate of Merit 2024 from the Royal Life Saving Society Commonwealth as an acknowledgement of his outstanding service and contribution to drowning prevention globally. His recognition highlights Bangladesh’s growing contribution to global drowning prevention efforts and acknowledges his sustained work in advancing lifesaving research, policy, and community-based interventions.
