Former Awami League lawmaker from Gaibandha-4 (Gobindaganj) constituency Alhaj Md MP Monowar Hossain Chowdhury died at a hospital in Dhaka on Tuesday night. He was 80.
He died around 9pm while undergoing treatment at Square Hospital after suffering a heart attack, his family said.
Monowar served as the chief executive engineer of the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) during his professional career. After retiring from government service, he entered politics and was elected to the ninth Jatiya Sangsad as an Awami League candidate from the Gobindaganj constituency.
He later received the party nomination for the 10th general election but lost to an Awami League rebel candidate. He was elected again as an Awami League candidate in the 11th general election.
In the 12th general election, he contested as an independent candidate after failing to secure the party nomination but was defeated.
His nephew Masum Lumen confirmed his death, describing Monowar as a humble, polite and honest person.
“Please pray for the forgiveness of his soul,” he said.
Family members, relatives, political associates and well-wishers expressed deep sorrow over his death and prayed for the salvation of his departed soul. They also conveyed condolences to the bereaved family.
