Romania has selected Cristian Mungiu’s “Fjord” as its official submission for the 2027 Academy Awards in the best international feature film category.
The decision was made unanimously by the country’s Oscar selection committee.
The film premiered in the official competition at the Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Palme d’Or, along with the FIPRESCI Prize, the Ecumenical Jury Prize, the Prix de la Citoyenneté and the François Chalais Prize.
Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve lead the cast.
Tudor Vladimir Panduru handled cinematography, Mircea Olteanu edited the film, and Simona Pădurețu served as production designer.
“Fjord” is a multinational co-production involving Romania, France, Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland.
It was produced by Mobra Films in collaboration with Why Not Productions, Eye Eye Pictures, Film i Väst, Filmgate Films, Garagefilm International, Snowglobe, Aamu Film Company and France 3 Cinéma.
The project received support from Romania’s National Film Centre, Eurimages and the Creative Europe MEDIA Programme.
The film opened in France on 19 August and is scheduled to reach Romanian cinemas this winter.
Goodfellas is handling international sales, while Neon Rated will distribute the film in the United States.
“Fjord” became eligible for Oscar consideration following a rule change introduced by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in May.
Under the revised rules, a non-English-language film can qualify either through an official submission by a country or region or by winning best film at a major international festival.
The films that currently qualify through the festival route include İlker Çatak’s “Yellow Letters”, which won at Berlin; “Fjord”, which won at Cannes; and Visar Morina’s “Shame and Money”, which received the World Cinema Grand Jury Prize at Sundance.
Venice, Toronto’s Platform section and Busan are also recognised under the new rule.
The shortlist for the 2027 Oscars is scheduled to be announced on 15 December, while the final nominations will be revealed on 21 January.
The 99th Academy Awards ceremony is set to take place in Los Angeles on 14 March.
