Mehjabin Ruba has been connected with music since childhood. The singer from Shariatpur’s Zajira first received training from Mizan at the local Shilpakala Academy before continuing her lessons under Apurbo Kumar in Dhaka.
In 2018, while studying in Class Nine, Ruba won first place among contestants from across Bangladesh’s divisions in the National Children’s Award Competition. She had also taken part in the Sherakontho singing competition in 2017.
She earned talent-pool scholarships in both the Primary School Certificate and Junior School Certificate examinations.
Ruba is now a third-year honours student in Food and Nutrition at Barishal Home Economics College, affiliated with the University of Dhaka. As a child, she loved singing songs by Sabina Yasmin, though she later developed an interest in the work of many other artists.
Alongside performing songs by other singers, Ruba dreams of releasing original music.
Recently, she recorded and posted on Facebook her own rendition of legendary singer Haimanti Shukla’s song Khujbe Amay Sedin Jedin Ami Thakbo Na.
“I tried to learn and practise this difficult song before singing it. After posting it on Facebook, the encouragement I received has given me more confidence to sing. To be honest, my dream is to make some good original songs. I don’t know when that dream will come true, but I believe it may happen soon. The rest is in Allah’s hands,” Ruba said.
