The government will purchase excess electricity produced from rooftop solar installations at Tk10.15 per unit to boost the use of renewable energy and tackle the ongoing energy crisis.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman announced this in Jatiya Sangsad on Wednesday, replying to a parliamentary query from lawmaker Nilufar Chowdhury Moni.
Tarique said the government has taken various steps to increase the use of renewable energy and generate interest among public to combat the energy crisis.
According to official sources, this purchase rate of Tk10.15 per unit of electricity supplied to the grid will apply to those who install rooftop solar systems within the next six months.
The government will provide an additional amount over the conventional purchase price of electricity as an incentive.
Consequently, producers will receive an additional benefit of approximately Tk6 to 7 per unit. This incentive facility will remain active for the next three years.
Tarique also informed Parliament that initiatives have been taken to reduce import duties and taxes on necessary equipment required for solar power installation, including solar panels, inverters, and batteries.
A National Rooftop Solar Programme has been undertaken to introduce rooftop solar systems in key establishments such as government buildings, educational institutions, and hospitals.
Special allocations have already been distributed to various ministries and agencies, and rooftop solar systems have been installed in various government offices, including the offices of district commissioners and divisional commissioners.
The prime minister expressed hope that the implementation of these initiatives will not only address the energy crisis but also increase the usage of renewable energy and boost the share of clean energy in the national power system.
