Antonio Rüdiger has announced his retirement from international football, bringing his Germany career to an end after 86 appearances. The 33-year-old Real Madrid defender confirmed the decision on social media on Tuesday, saying he had taken time to consider his future before deciding to step away from the national team.
“After some time of reflection, the time has come for me to end my career in the national team and clear the way for the young generation,” Rüdiger wrote. Rüdiger made his Germany debut in 2014 and went on to become one of the country’s most experienced defenders. He represented Germany at three World Cups and two European Championships, while also helping the team win the 2017 Confederations Cup.
Looking back on his international career, Rüdiger described his time with Germany as a defining period of his life despite the team’s struggles to win major honours in recent years. “Even though a major title eluded us in recent tournaments and we had to accept some painful defeats, this time was an extremely special chapter for me that will shape me forever,” he said.
Rüdiger also thanked his former team-mates, coaches and support staff, with particular praise for Joachim Löw, Hansi Flick and Julian Nagelsmann. He also acknowledged Horst Hrubesch, who worked with him during his youth international career.
The defender reserved a special message for Germany supporters, highlighting the atmosphere surrounding Euro 2024 on home soil. “And of course to you fans: Thank you for your support – especially for the unique atmosphere at our home Euro 2024,” he wrote.
Rüdiger’s decision comes around two months after Germany’s elimination from the 2026 World Cup. He will now concentrate fully on his club career with Real Madrid. “For me, a new chapter is beginning now, in which I will focus fully and completely on my club,” Rüdiger said.
His retirement marks the end of a 12-year international career in which he became a regular presence at the heart of Germany’s defence.
