Rohanat Doullah Borson faces another two-month spell on the sidelines after the Bangladesh pacer suffered a recurrence of his old back injury.
The 21-year-old impressed during the Bangladesh High Performance team’s tour of South Africa, taking 12 wickets in the one-day series. He then travelled to Australia for the Top End T20 tournament.
Borson never played a match in Australia, however, as his previous lower-back problem returned.
The young quick had already spent around 15 months away from cricket because of the injury. He returned earlier this year and quickly showed why Bangladesh had rated him highly.
He produced a strong campaign in the Dhaka Premier League before joining the HP squad for the South Africa tour. His 12 wickets in the one-day matches gave his comeback another lift.
The problem returned soon after he reached Australia.
Borson consulted an Australian doctor and underwent scans. The reports did not reveal a major new problem, but doctors advised him to take another extended period of rest.
He will now spend around two months away from competitive cricket.
During that period, Borson will continue gym work and running while following a specific rehabilitation programme. If his recovery stays on track, he could return through the Bangladesh First tournament.
The latest setback has also forced the Bangladesh Cricket Board to take a cautious approach with the young fast bowler.
A BCB source said Borson will currently remain in consideration mainly for T20 cricket because of concerns over his back. The source also said the injury risk could remain a concern until the pacer turns 23.
That approach could delay Borson’s push for the national team. Bangladesh need to manage his workload carefully after his previous 15-month absence and the latest recurrence.
Borson’s performances in South Africa had offered a glimpse of what he could bring. His pace and ability to trouble batters helped him finish the one-day series with 12 wickets.
