India will host the first ICC Women’s Champions Trophy in 2027 after the tournament was moved from Sri Lanka.
The six team event will run from February 14 to 28. It will be played in the T20I format and will feature 16 matches.
India, Australia, England, New Zealand, South Africa and Sri Lanka have qualified for the tournament. The teams earned their places through the ICC Women’s T20I Team Rankings.
Mumbai and Vadodara will host the matches. The Cricket Club of India in Mumbai and the Vadodara International Cricket Stadium will be the two venues.
All six teams will play against each other in the league stage. The top two teams will then meet in the final.
Sri Lanka had initially received the hosting rights. However, the ICC later decided to move the competition to India after reviewing the situation in Sri Lankan cricket.
Sri Lanka Cricket is currently under a government appointed committee. The ICC considers government or political involvement in cricket administration against its rules.
India won the hosting rights after the ICC also considered proposals from Bangladesh and South Africa.
ICC Chairman Jay Shah welcomed the launch of the new competition.
“The ICC Women’s Champions Trophy 2027 marks an exciting new chapter for women’s cricket,” Shah said.
He believes the tournament will bring the world’s leading teams together in a competitive event. He also expects it to give teams more reason to improve their rankings and qualify for major tournaments.
Shah said the ICC also wants to build a more regular schedule of major events in women’s cricket.
“With a marquee ICC women’s event now taking place every year, we have a significant opportunity to build greater momentum, provide more consistency and create a stronger rhythm for the women’s game, its players and its fans around the world,” he said.
