Bangladesh and Japan on Tuesday reaffirmed their commitment to accelerating high-quality infrastructure development and sustainable investment through Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) at the 8th Bangladesh–Japan Joint PPP Platform Meeting held at InterContinental Dhaka.
The meeting reviewed ongoing projects, discussed new project proposals and outlined priorities for future collaboration under the Bangladesh–Japan Joint PPP Platform, reads a press release.
The meeting was attended by Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister A B M Abdus Sattar, Chief Executive Officer of the Public Private Partnership Authority Ashik Chowdhury, and Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (Overseas Employment for the Asia-Pacific Region, Secretary Rank) Md Shakirul Islam Khan.
The Japanese delegation included Special Adviser to the Prime Minister of Japan UNO Yoshimasa, ambassador of Japan to Bangladesh Saida Shinichi, assistant vice minister for Real Estate & Construction Economy of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Fujita Masakuni, assistant vice-minister for International Aviation Nakamaya Reiko, along with senior government officials and development partners from both countries.
The platform reviewed progress on key ongoing projects, including the Kamalapur Multimodal Transport Hub, Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport Terminal 3 Operation and Maintenance, the Outer Ring Road Project, and the Local Bridge Improvement Project of the Roads and Highways Department (RHD).
Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to resolving implementation issues, strengthening inter-agency coordination and accelerating project delivery.
Regarding the Kamalapur Multimodal Transport Hub, both sides confirmed continued coordination on the revised master plan and related implementation activities.
The two sides also reaffirmed their commitment to expediting the remaining processes for the operation and maintenance of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport Terminal 3 and agreed to continue implementation monitoring through the Bangladesh–Japan Joint PPP Platform following contract signing.
The meeting also focused on future PPP projects aimed at strengthening Bangladesh’s connectivity and economic development.
The Shariatpur–Chandpur Bridge and Barisal–Bhola Bridge were confirmed as new platform projects under the Bangladesh–Japan Joint PPP Platform, reflecting the shared commitment of both governments to advance the strategic infrastructure initiatives.
The Japanese delegation also proposed including the Waste to Energy Project in Chattogram City under the platform, highlighting its potential to support sustainable urban development and environmental management.
The Bangladesh delegation formally presented the Bhola–Lakshmipur Bridge project, while the Japanese side expressed strong interest in the initiative, recognising its strategic importance in enhancing regional connectivity, facilitating trade and driving economic growth in southern Bangladesh.
The platform also reviewed a proposal to renew Bangladesh’s ageing railway bridges through Japanese technical cooperation, expanding the pipeline of future PPP collaboration.
In his remarks, PPP Authority CEO Ashik Chowdhury said the Bangladesh–Japan PPP partnership has evolved into a trusted platform for delivering transformative infrastructure and attracting quality investment. He reaffirmed the PPP Authority’s commitment to expediting project implementation through close coordination among all stakeholders.
The meeting concluded with remarks by Principal Secretary A B M Abdus Sattar, who reaffirmed the government’s full support for the Bangladesh–Japan Joint PPP Platform and its commitment to ensuring the successful implementation of priority PPP projects.
Both Bangladesh and Japan reiterated their commitment to deepening cooperation, fast-tracking strategic infrastructure initiatives and promoting sustainable development to enhance connectivity, create jobs, strengthen regional competitiveness and support Bangladesh’s long-term economic growth.
