The final chapter of the modern Jumanji franchise has arrived with its first trailer, promising its biggest adventure yet as the game’s virtual heroes escape into the real world.
The trailer for Jumanji: Open World reunites Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan and Alex Wolff for the fifth and final film in the franchise, and the third featuring the current cast.
The preview opens with Spencer Gilpin, played by Wolff, enjoying time with family and friends during the holiday season when chaos erupts as a rhinoceros crashes into a restaurant. Amid the confusion, Spencer encounters Dr Xander “Smolder” Bravestone, Professor Sheldon “Shelly” Oberon, Franklin “Mouse” Finbar and Ruby Roundhouse. The familiar video game avatars have somehow escaped into the real world and are described as being “stuck in demo mode”.
The story follows the group’s mission to return the players to the game. Along the way, they once again find themselves switching bodies with people from Spencer’s real life, creating another round of unexpected twists.
The cast also includes Danny DeVito, Nick Jonas, Awkwafina, Marin Hinkle, Bebe Neuwirth, Lamorne Morris and Rhys Darby.
The Jumanji franchise began with Chris Van Allsburg’s 1981 children’s book, which was adapted into the hit 1995 film starring Robin Williams and Kirsten Dunst. Although that film did not receive a direct sequel, its success led to the 2005 spin-off Zathura.
The series was revived in 2017 with Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, followed by Jumanji: The Next Level in 2019. While the original story centred on a magical board game that transported players into a jungle, the recent films reimagined the concept through the world of video games.
Jumanji: Open World is scheduled to open in cinemas on Christmas Day 2026.
