Bangladeshi actor Jaya Ahsan has received widespread praise from critics in West Bengal for her performance in Aajo Ardhangini, the sequel to Kaushik Ganguly’s 2023 film Ardhangini.
Released on 10 July, the film has drawn positive responses from both audiences and reviewers.
Production house Surinder Films said most of its screenings have been running to full houses.
In its review, Sangbad Pratidin described Jaya as “perfect” in the role of Meghna, praising her emotional depth and screen presence.
The publication said her performance gives the film a distinctive emotional flow.
Online news portal The Wall also commended her portrayal, writing that Jaya delivered a restrained yet impactful performance.
It noted that although Meghna has limited dialogue, her presence remains memorable.
The review added that the character’s emotional conflict between guilt, love, uncertainty and hesitation comes across convincingly, while her scenes with Churni Ganguly add emotional depth to the film.
The Telegraph echoed similar praise, saying Jaya convincingly portrayed a woman torn between guilt, love and uncertainty.
Although the sequel offers the character fewer opportunities to express emotion than the original film, the publication said her measured performance effectively captures Meghna’s fragile state of mind.
However, The Times of India criticised the way Meghna’s character was written.
While praising Jaya’s sincere performance, the review said the character’s emotional journey often feels unnecessarily complicated, making it difficult for audiences to consistently empathise with her.
Anandabazar Patrika also praised the actor, writing that the sequel makes audiences develop an even deeper affection for Meghna.
“Meghna was already an established character. Over time, she has become a part of the family and has gained acceptance.
The child has grown up, and new people have entered her life. She has become more confident. But she again faces emotional conflicts and unexpected situations in her family life. The new film explores that journey,” she said.
Alongside Jaya Ahsan, Aajo Ardhangini also stars Kaushik Sen and Churni Ganguly.
