Brazilian great Ronaldinho has praised Argentina’s fighting spirit ahead of Monday’s World Cup final against Spain, saying the team’s character and resilience remain its greatest strength heading into major tournaments.
Ronaldinho said Argentina had stayed true to their identity throughout the competition, overcoming repeated knockout stage setbacks with the same grit that has long defined the national team. “Argentina is Argentina, it has always been that way,” he said. “It’s passion and determination, and they are achieving it again in the same style. It’s the kind of football I enjoy watching.”
The 2002 World Cup winner also spoke warmly of Lionel Messi, saying the Argentina captain’s influence goes well beyond what he provides on the pitch. “They have Messi,” Ronaldinho said. “The team has the humility to play for him. He can solve all the problems they have.”
Argentina stumbled through parts of the knockout stages after cruising through the group phase, repeatedly falling behind before fighting back to reach the final. That resilience, built around Messi and Lautaro Martinez, has been central to Ronaldinho’s admiration for this Argentina side.
Speaking to Globo, the former Barcelona forward, who played alongside Messi for four seasons and won five trophies together, including the 2005-06 Champions League, said the squad’s willingness to work for their captain stood out. “The team has that humility. Everyone runs for him, they know when to give Messi the ball,” he said. “They know Messi can make the difference and decide the match. I think the unity they have is also beautiful to see.”
Ronaldinho added that Argentina’s competitive identity, defined by dedication, intensity and personality, had again been on display throughout this tournament. “It’s the Argentine race, that grit. Argentines have always had that reputation, and once again they are playing that way. The let’s go for it, that’s how Argentines are,” he said.
Argentina face Spain in the World Cup final at MetLife Stadium on 20 July, with kickoff at 1:00am Bangladesh time.
