Nearly eight years after the murder of Shahinur Akter in Dhaka’s Keraniganj, a court has sentenced her husband to life imprisonment and fined him Tk50,000 for killing her over dowry demands.
In default, Md Jahangir Alam will serve one more year in jail.
On Thursday, Dhaka’s Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal‑4, presided over by Senior District and Sessions Judge Munshi Md Moshior Rahman, delivered the verdict. State counsel Md Ershad Alam confirmed the judgment.
Case records show Shahinur married Jahangir about 11–12 years ago after her first husband’s death. They lived in a rented house in Khalpar under Keraniganj Model Police Station. Jahangir, alleged to be a drug addict, frequently demanded dowry, sparking quarrels.
The killing occurred on 19 November 2018 after a dispute over dowry escalated.
Jahangir was later arrested and gave a confessional statement. Investigators submitted the charge sheet in June 2019, with six witnesses and documentary evidence presented during trial.
