Police rescued three Rohingya teenagers from a mosque in Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar, on Sunday, a day after they went missing from a refugee camp in Teknaf.
A team from the 16th Armed Police Battalion (16 APBn) rescued the boys at around 11:30am from a mosque in the market area of Jamtoli Rohingya Refugee Camp No 15.
They were later reunited with their families following identity verification and administrative checks.
The teenagers were identified as Shafiul Alam, 14, Md Azad, 13, and Md Arman, 12, all residents of Chakmarkul Rohingya Refugee Camp No. 21 in Whaikyang Union of Teknaf.
According to 16 APBn, the three left home at around 9am on Saturday to attend a madrasa in Block A-4 of the camp but did not return.
After searching several areas without finding them, their families reported the matter to the Chakmarkul APBn camp at around 7am on Sunday.
A special police team subsequently launched a search operation and intensified intelligence surveillance.
Commander of 16 APBn and Additional Deputy Inspector General Kawsar Sikder said police began searching for the teenagers immediately after receiving the report.
“Intelligence surveillance was stepped up and a special team of law enforcement forces commenced work immediately after receiving news of the missing teenagers,” he said.
Acting on a tip-off, police later located and rescued the three from the mosque in Jamtoli camp.
“Following necessary verification, they have been handed over to their families,” Kawsar added.
