In a landmark departure from protocol, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Tuesday spent an extended period on the front lines of the Bangladesh Army’s summer manoeuvres in Manikganj.
He arrived unannounced at 9:20am at the summer training site of 8 Bir, operating under the 9 Infantry Division, located in Singair upazila. Upon arrival, he conducted an extensive inspection of the training area on foot.
During the visit, the prime minister toured various sectors of “firm base” and was briefed on training activities and strategic preparedness by general officer commanding (GOC) and the unit’s commanding officer (CO).
He observed a commander’s verbal operational instructions and witnessed a “raid” exercise carried out by the troops.
The prime minister’s inspection included a detailed look at battlefield positioning, combat tactics, the deployment of weaponry, and various elements of realistic field training. He also descended into army bunkers to exchange views on combat strategy with participating officers and soldiers.
In a show of personal interest, he interacted with soldiers positioned in camouflage behind foliage, enquiring about their wellbeing and encouraging them in their duties.
In a gesture of camaraderie that was met with great enthusiasm by the personnel, the prime minister shared tea and consumed food prepared on-site for the soldiers.
Addressing the troops, Tarique noted that the people of Bangladesh maintain deep trust in the army.
He lauded the army’s distinguished role in managing national crises and maintaining law and order, while stressing the vital importance of professional training, discipline, and the maintenance of maximum readiness.
Tarique concluded his address by wishing the Bangladesh Army continued success.
He was accompanied by Defence Adviser Brigadier General (retd) AKM Shamsul Islam; the Chief of Army Staff General Waker-Uz-Zaman; Military Secretary Major General Abul Hasnat Mohammad Tariq; and other senior military officials.
